Coimbatore: The injured female elephant calf that was rescued from Used forest range in the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve on Monday died at Kozhikamuthi elephant camp in the early hours of Thursday, without responding to treatment.
The elephant, with wounds to its right hind leg, was not able to move when the forest field staff spotted the animal in the reserve forest on Monday. A Sukumarforest veterinary officer with Coimbatore forest division, and team subsequently cleaned the maggots and pus from the wound and dressed it up after applying medicines.
At the Kozhikamuthi elephant camp, the calf was kept in a kraal. On Wednesday, an expert team from the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in Namakkal examined the elephant and provided treatment.
Sukumar said the calf had suffered septicemia and collapsed in the kraal on Wednesday evening. “The elephant died without responding to treatment in the early hours of Thursday.
