Kerala crosses 1-lakh mark in active Covid cases | Thiruvananthapuram News – Times of India

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With test positivity rate over 30% and active cases once again crossing the one lakh mark, the state is witnessing a rapid spike in Covid-19 cases.
The state crossed one lakh active cases after three months when on October 11 the state witnessed the one lakh mark (1,01,419). On Sunday, the active cases have become 1,03,864.
A rapid spread in cases is being reported in Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam where the active cases are 20,665 and 20,554, respectively. The TPR in these districts have also gone above 30%, thereby necessitating the district administration to impose severe restrictions.
As per reports, there are at least 18 institutional clusters in Thiruvananthapuram and 11 in Ernakulam. In Thiruvananthapuram, half a dozen healthcare institutions, including both government and private hospitals, have become clusters. Similarly, several educational institutions in Ernakulam have become clusters.
The district administration of these two districts have totally banned all kinds of gatherings, including religious functions at places of worships.
Only funerals and marriages have been allowed with a maximum participation of 50 people each.
In the last one week, 20,345 cases were reported in Thiruvananthapuram, and 13,916 cases in Ernakulam. Kozhikode with 7,755 cases and Thrissur with 6915 are two other districts which is also witnessing a massive spread in cases.
In the week January 9-15, the number of active cases on an average in the state were 57,644. When compared to that of the previous week, there has been an increase of 51,712 new cases in the state.
There is 174% increase in new cases being reported in comparison to the previous week. The average test positivity rate in the last seven days was 16.5%, which has now risen above 30%.
The health department has issued warnings in all the districts with a massive spike in cases. It has been asked to avoid all kinds of mass gatherings and also to strictly follow Covid protocols when people are going out.
