Kanpur commissioner Asim Arun seeks VRS, set to contest as BJP candidate | Kanpur News – Times of India

LUCKNOW: Hours after the model code of conduct came into effect for the assembly elections, the first interesting announcement to hit the political circles in the state came from the police quarters when the Kanpur police commissioner Asim Arun took to the facebook to announce that he has applied for voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) from Indian Police Services (IPS) and thanked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for considering him worthy of being a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Though Asim Arun had formally announced only applying for the VRS, sources said the BJP was already considering fielding him as party candidate from Kannauj Sadar assembly constituency. A 1994-batch IPS, Asim Arun has enjoyed the reputation of being an innovative officer where his master’s degree in policy studies from British Columbia University has come in handy.
Asim Arun was head of 112 service and ATS before taking over as the first police commissioner of Kanpur. He has also served as SP in Garhwal (then under UP), Balrampur, Hathras, Siddharthnagar, Aligarh, Gorakhpur and Agra. He has also undergone a commando training course in National Security Guard (NSG) and served as a part of the close protection team of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his stint as SP Special Protection Group (SPG).
Sources in the government confirmed that Arun has moved his application for the VRS. “As per the provisions for seeking VRS, the applicant is relieved of his duties after three months of applying for it. But Asim Arun has urged the government to relieve him by January 15,” said a source in the government.
Bureaucrats familiar with the processing of VRS said it was however the government’s prerogative to relieve anyone from duty on any date once an application has been moved. “There are several instances where the government has not waited for the three-month period,” said an officer.
In his statement posted on Facebook, Asim Arun stated that he has sought VRS because he wants to serve the nation and the society in a different manner. “I am feeling very honored that respected chief minister Yogi Adityanath Ji has found me suitable for being a member of the BJP,” Asim’s statement read.
Asim says he will make efforts to use his discipline and experience of working in various wings of the police to serve the party and become a supporter of prime minister Narendra Modi’s initiative to bring together people of varied experiences and expertise together. “I will try to follow the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi to stand for the weakest and the poorest in society. Serving as an IPS officer and now this honour has all been possible because of the system of ‘uniformity of opportunity’ that has been possible because of Baba Saheb Ambedkar,” Asim states in his post.
After paying his respect to his late parents – father Sriram Arun who was a former DGP of UP and mother Shashi Arun who passed away a few months ago, Asim thanked them for their blessing ending his post on an emotional note saying that the only thing he will miss is wearing the uniform.
