Kalpana Anandakumar becomes first woman mayor of Coimbatore Corporation | Coimbatore News – Times of India

COIMBATORE: Kalpana Anandakumara first-time councillor elected from ward 19 (Maniyakaranpalayam) , was sworn in as the first woman mayor of the Coimbatore Corporation on Friday after she was elected unopposed.
The DMK and its alliance partners’ candidates won from 96 out of 100 wards. Only 94 were present in the council at the time of selection as per records. Two candidates, one from the Congress and another from the DMK were late and were not taken into account. Three AIADMK councillors and one CPI councillor were absent. Alima Begum, an independent candidate, remained neutral in the council.
Electricity minister V Senthil Balajiwho was present in the swearing-in ceremony, later told reporters that both mayor Kalpana and DMK’s deputy mayor-designate R Vetri Selvam are from humble backgrounds. Kalapana had been working in a company for a monthly salary of Rs 13,500. He thanked chief minister M K Stalin for bringing people from humble background to powerful posts.
