These days a petition related to the Chambers of Lawyers is being heard in the Supreme Court. In fact, recently the Administrative Branch of the Supreme Court has released a list of 468 lawyers who will have to share the chamber with another lawyer.

Since in front of this list, lawyers have been demanding that the single sitting system should be implemented by abolishing the provision of sitting two judges together in the chambers. During the hearing on Monday, Justice DY Chandrachud said that when he was the Additional Solicitor General, he used to sit in a chamber of 120 square feet in Mumbai.

Some lawyers got chamber after 40 years- Justice Chandrachud
Justice Chandrachud said- ‘The truth is that whatever we do will hurt the sentiments of the bar. But it needs to be noted that there are some lawyers who have got the chamber after 40 years, there are others who have been waiting for a very long time to get the chamber.

Lawyers will file application before the panel of judges
Lawyers have argued before them that their chamber rooms are already too small and there is no scope for sharing. Subsequently, a bench headed by Justice Chandrachud allowed the lawyers to file an application before the panel of judges. This panel is overseeing the process of converting a single chamber of lawyers into a sharing chamber.

The bench said that the committee headed by the senior-most judge of the court is looking into the process of division of chambers and if any section of the bar has any objection to the process, they are allowed to present their case before the panel. Justice AS Bopanna, who was included in this bench, said that giving a chamber to a lawyer would mean that half the lawyers would sit in the rooms and half would be left outside.

Justice Ramana told the lawyers – you are lucky
During the urgent hearing of this petition last week, Chief Justice NV Ramana had said – In our time, getting a place to practice law was very big. We used to practice standing under a tree. You are lucky that you are getting chambers.
