Renu Gopinath Panicker, former CEO of Zharcraft, joined the Janata Dal (United) on Monday. He took membership of the party in the presence of the party’s state president and Rajya Sabha MP Khiru Mahto. He has been named as the State Vice President of JD(U).

On this occasion, Mahto said that the joining of Panicker will strengthen the party in Jharkhand. She further said, she has had a good association with women self-help groups and other women’s organisations, which will help her in getting into the party in future.

Party’s Jharkhand president Mahto further said that she would play an important role in connecting women supporters with the party by visiting various districts of the state. Panicker said, I have joined JD(U) because it is a party related to my core ideology. I want to work for the youth of Jharkhand and this party will give me that opportunity.

Panikar has been one of the accused in the blanket purchase scam, which allegedly happened during the previous Raghuvar Das government. In July 2020, the Hemant Soren government had asked the ACB to initiate a preliminary inquiry against the former Jharcraft CEO and some other officials in connection with the blanket scam.

The scam allegedly took place in 2017-18. Then the Raghuvar Das government had decided to buy blankets from Jharcraft (Jharkhand Silk Textile and Handicraft Development Corporation Limited). However, Panicker denied his involvement in the blanket scam.
