Expansion

Jharkhand Chief Minister and BJP leader Raghubar Das made a big announcement on Saturday, saying that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will be implemented in the state if the BJP comes to power in the next year’s assembly elections. He pointed out that the ‘large-scale infiltration of Bangladeshis’ in the state has become a major concern and threat to the residents. These illegal immigrants from the neighboring country have married local women and acquired thousands of acres of land in the area.

Raghuvar Das said that he wrote a letter to the central government in 2018 about this situation. The tribal-dominated Santal Pargana region of Jharkhand, especially in Parkur and Sahebganj districts, has seen a rapid increase in the population of outside infiltrators. He said that the issue of rapidly changing demography in the Santal Parganas region including Godda, Deoghar, Dumka, Jamtara, Sahibganj and Pakur districts has already been raised in the Parliament.

Raghubar Das alleged that the Hemant Soren government was adopting a policy of appeasement and infiltrators were being given protection by the JMM government for vote bank. The tribal population in the area is under threat. Das also said that the BJP has already geared up to ensure the party’s victory in all the 14 parliamentary constituencies in the state in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. To a question about the meeting of opposition parties in Patna on Friday, Das said it will have “no impact on national politics or Jharkhand politics”.

Tribal organizations will discuss on Uniform Civil Code

Representatives of over 30 tribal organizations will gather in Ranchi on Sunday to discuss the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), which they fear will dilute tribal customary laws. Its member Dev Kumar Dhan said, since the Law Commission has started a fresh consultation on the UCC, the Tribal Coordination Committee has decided to register its protest with the government on the issue.

He said almost all major tribal organizations across the state have decided to join the fight against the UCC. Representatives of tribal organizations will gather under the banner of Tribal Coordination Committee. The 22nd Law Commission of India on 14 June invited fresh suggestions from various stakeholders including public and religious organizations on UCC.
