Jharkhand Monsoon session: Monsoon session of Jharkhand Legislative Assembly from today, opposition can raise the issue of corruption

Monsoon session of Jharkhand Legislative Assembly is going to start from today. The session will have a total of six working days and is likely to conclude on August 5. The session is likely to be a tumultuous one as the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to corner the government on several issues including corruption, law and order situation and drought-like situation in the state. In this six-day monsoon session of the state assembly, the state government is preparing to re-introduce important bills against lynching and setting up of tribal universities in the state as both these bills were passed by the assembly earlier also. But due to the difference in their Hindi-English translation, the Governor returned them without signing.

It was agreed to hold a special discussion during the session on the drought situation in the state in an all-party meeting convened by the Speaker, Rabindra Nath Mahto, regarding the preparations for the entire session. But the BJP did not attend the all-party meeting. The BJP camp held a meeting of the legislature party on Thursday to chalk out the strategy for the session. BJP Chief Whip Biranchi Narayan said the session would be a tumultuous one as the government has to respond on several issues including corruption, deteriorating law and order situation and delay in announcement of relief measures for farmers. He claimed that “corruption is at its peak” in Jharkhand.

Narayan said, “The recent investigation by the Enforcement Directorate shows that the chief minister’s people have direct links with corruption. It seems that the chief minister protects the corrupt. He has to answer.”
The ED on August 1 summoned Abhishek Prasad alias Pintu, press advisor to the chief minister, for questioning in a money laundering probe related to an alleged illegal mining scam in Jharkhand. On July 19, the ED had arrested Soren’s political aide Pankaj Mishra in this case.

During the session, the state government will also present the first supplementary budget for the current financial year. The main opposition BJP has prepared to lay siege to the government during the session on issues like illegal mining in the state, murder of a woman sub-inspector in Ranchi, Friday instead of Sunday in government schools.

The state government is expected to present its first supplementary budget for the current financial year on August 1, while the discussion is likely to take place on August 2. Other bills will be introduced in the House between August 3 and 5. According to the provisional schedule of the assembly, on July 30 and 31, the sitting of the house will not be held on Saturday and Sunday.
