Acting on a tip-off, a house was raided in Purulia and Besra was rescued, said Prabhat Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police, East Singhbhum. Senior Superintendent of Police said that chief accused Chittaranjan Mahato has been arrested along with three others.

The gang had also kidnapped two people from Baripada in Odisha in August and extorted Rs 7.50 lakh from their families, police said. He said that several criminal cases, including theft, were registered against the mahats in Purulia and Jamshedpur.
