Angered by frequent power cuts in parts of Jharkhand, BJP’s Dhanbad Sadar MLA Raj Sinha on Thursday began a 72-hour dharna at Randhir Verma Chowk, demanding restoration of normal power supply. Earlier this week, Education Minister Jagarnath Mahato had warned that if the situation did not improve soon, the supply of coal and water to the electricity supplier Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) would be cut off.

Sinha claimed that the people of the state’s coal sector are facing power and water crisis for the last three months. The local administration, concerned departments are making very little effort to solve their problems. The MLA said that he was left with no option but to hold a dharna to draw attention to the problem. He threatened to intensify the agitation if the state government did not find a solution.

The MLA alleged that people are facing power cuts for 15 to 16 hours a day. Why do consumers face load shedding after paying their bills on time? The state government is indifferent to their plight. The DVC has blocked power in seven districts – Dhanbad, Giridih, Bokaro, Koderma, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh and Chatra, citing dues as reasons.

Sinha claimed that the Hemant Soren government has also reduced the water supply in Coal City. He said that Dhanbad was earlier being supplied 65 MLD (million liters per day) from Maithon water project to meet the requirement of 11 lakh coal city citizens. Now its quantity has been increased to 40 MLD.
