An orphaned tribal girl student from a remote village in Jharkhand’s Maoist violence-hit Khunti district has cracked one of the toughest exams – JEE Main. Elisha Hassa (19) never even knew how to speak Hindi. She told that she wants to make a difference in the lives of poverty stricken children by becoming an engineer.

Elisha said that at the age of nine he lost his parents. After this he was admitted to an orphanage. From there, in 2015, she enrolled in Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Kalamati in the district. Elisha told that she prepared for JEE Main by joining the ‘Flight of Dreams’ coaching program run by the district administration. He got 1,788th rank in ST category. She is now preparing for JEE Advanced.

Nine more successful including descendants of Birsa Munda

Like Elisha, nine more girl students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya have got success in JEE Main. These include Saraswati Munda, a descendant of revolutionary Birsa Munda. Birsa Munda had waged a war against the British long before the struggle for independence. Seeing the excellent performance of the girl students, Chief Minister Hemant Soren has promised them all possible cooperation.
