Jawed Habib writes: Dos and don’ts for coloring hair at home

Coloring hair at home is not as easy as we all think. There are a lot of DIY hair dyes available in the markets but we need to understand the right process of color application to avoid damage. The best is to visit a professional to color your hair but if you want it at home, here’s is some advice on how to do it well at home.

*Don’t expect the same color that is shown on the color box. We all think that the color shade on the box is what we will get on our hair but the base color of the hair shown on the box can be different and that affects the result of the color that we apply to our hair.

*Do understand your skin tone before deciding on the right color. The color that you apply should suit your complexion as well as your hair’s natural color. Start with colors that are two shades lighter or darker only in the beginning.

*Don’t wash your hair right after coloring. Prepare your hair a day or a few hours before coloring it. Preconditioning (applying oil on hair for 5 minutes) & washing with a clarifying shampoo is good. After coloring, you must use a conditioner only.

*Do a patch test. Apply the color on a small section of your hair before using it to your whole head. This will help you prevent your hair & skin from allergic reactions.

*Don’t overdo it with color. If you are using the color to cover grey hair, apply it only on the roots that need coverage. Applying the color over already colored hair repeatedly can damage it.

*Do your hair coloring with the sectioning technique. Take thin sections of your hair and apply color properly with the help of a dye brush.

*Don’t apply the color for more than the processing time described on the color box. Keeping it on hair for longer than required can damage hair.

*Do the right mixing. Read the mixing instructions on the box. Mix color & developer accordingly in the correct ratio. This is very important for good results.

*Don’t wash your color with hot water. Use cool or slightly warm water for color wash always. That will prevent color fading.

*Do your hair coloring using proper tools – gloves, apron, mixing bowl, coloring comb, and a dye brush, etc, you can end up with a mess otherwise.

Hair coloring at home should not be done regularly. Once in a while, it is ok but if we do it often, it can affect the hair. hairstylists at salons are professionally trained to do the color treatments. Mixing, application, and washing require professional techniques when it comes to hair coloring, at home, it is not really possible to do it in the right way. The best is to visit a salon, but if you want to give it a try at home….follow the above points.
