Jalandhar Lok Sabha election results today: Counting of votes will also take place on two seats in UP, Sohiong in Meghalaya and Jharsuguda in Odisha.

The main contest in Jalandhar is between BJP, AAP, Congress and SAD.

The results of the by-election for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat will come on Saturday. The counting of votes will start here from 8 am. Total voting in Jalandhar is 54.70%. Tight security arrangements have been made for the counting. On the other hand, the counting of votes will also take place on Swar and Chanbe in UP, Jharsuguda in Odisha, Sohiong assembly seats in Meghalaya today. Voting took place here on 10 May.

The bypoll to the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat is witnessing a contest between the BJP, the Congress, the Akali Dal and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party.

Security has been beefed up around the counting centers set up in the office of the Director, Land Records and Sports College Complex, Kapurthala Road. A total of 19 candidates were in the fray. Prominent among them are Sushil Rinku of AAP, Karamjit Kaur Choudhary of Congress, Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal of BJP and Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

Out of 16,21,800 (16.21 lakh) voters, 8,87,154 (8.87 lakh) cast their votes in Jalandhar on May 10.

AAP is hoping to register its presence in the Lok Sabha by registering a victory in the bypolls. The victory will come as a big boost for the party, which faced defeat in the Lok Sabha bypoll in Sangrur just three months after coming to power in March 2022.

The bypoll is also being seen as a test of the Bhagwant Mann-led government’s one-year performance. Has come to power with promises of free electricity, jobs to youth, regularization of contract workers, action against corruption. Jalandhar MP Santokh Singh Chowdhary died of a heart attack in January this year during Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra. After which the by-election is being held here.

By-elections were held in Swar and Chanbe assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. 44.95% voting in Swar and 39.51% voting in Chanbe. The Swar seat fell vacant after Azam Khan’s son Abdullah Azam quit the assembly. The Chanbe assembly seat fell vacant after the death of Apna Dal (S) MLA Rahul Kol.

There were 6 candidates in Swar seat of Mirzapur and 8 candidates in Chanbe seat.

The eyes of the entire state are on the Swar assembly seat of Rampur, because the prestige of Azam Khan is at stake here. Abdullah Azam’s legislature was revoked after he was convicted in a 15-year-old case and sentenced to 2 years’ imprisonment. This time no member of Azam Khan’s family is in the fray. Azam himself is exerting strength for SP’s Hindu candidate Anuradha Chauhan.

The Swar seat was won by SP’s Abdullah Azam in 2017 and 2022. In the year 2022, Abdullah defeated Haider Ali Khan of Apna Dal (S) by 61 thousand votes. In 2017, Abdullah defeated BJP’s Laxmi Saini by around 53,000 votes. But both the times the legislature of Abdullah Azam went away.

BJD-BJP contest on Odisha’s Jharsuguda seat In Jharsuguda assembly constituency in Odisha, 68.12% voting took place on May 10. The seat has been vacant since the assassination of Health Minister Naba Kishore Das on January 29. The contest is mainly between BJD, BJP and Congress. The BJD has fielded Das’s daughter Dipali Das, while the BJP has fielded Tankadhar Tripathi. Congress has fielded Tarun Pandey, son of late MLA Biren Pandey. All three are new candidates.

Preparations for counting on Meghalaya’s Sohyeong seat completed
Sohyeong assembly constituency in Meghalaya recorded 91.39% voting. The counting of votes will take place here today. All preparations for counting have been completed. UDP’s HDR Lyngdoh passed away before the assembly elections in February-March. He was the MLA from Sohyeong seat. Because of this, the by-election was held on this seat.
