Apple is expanding its manufacturing operations in India, with the production of its premium iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models in the country, the media has reported. This move comes a year after the company began manufacturing iPhone 15 models in India, marking a significant step in Apple’s strategy to diversify its production locations. Industry sources suggest that manufacturing in India could potentially reduce costs for Apple by approximately 10 per cent, as reported by Economic Times (ET). However, consumers may not see a decrease in retail prices due to taxes and component expenses.
This decision represents a milestone for Apple, as it will be the first time these high-end iPhone models are assembled outside of China. The shift is part of Apple’s broader strategy to reduce its dependence on Chinese manufacturing amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Foxconn Tamil Nadu Unit To Assemble iPhone 16 Pro Models
Apple has been gradually increasing its presence in India’s manufacturing sector, having previously assembled earlier iPhone models in the country. The company is now partnering with several manufacturers to expand its operations. Foxconn, a key Apple supplier, is reportedly preparing its facility in Tamil Nadu for iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max production. The company is investing in workforce training to ensure adherence to Apple’s strict quality standards.
Other Apple partners in India, including Pegatron and Tata Group, are also expected to participate in the assembly process. Production is anticipated to begin shortly after the global launch of the iPhone 16 series, which is rumored to be scheduled for early September at Apple’s headquarters.
This expansion in India aligns with Apple’s strategy to create a more diverse and resilient supply chain, reducing its reliance on a single manufacturing hub.
While the devices will be assembled locally, a large portion of the India-produced iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max units are slated for export to markets in Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. This export-focused approach is partly due to the lower domestic demand for premium iPhone models in India.
Industry analysts predict that this expansion of Indian manufacturing operations could boost the country’s share of global iPhone production from 14 per cent to approximately 25 per cent by 2025. This aligns with Apple’s broader strategy to diversify its supply chain and reduce dependence on a single manufacturing hub.
As excitement builds for the iPhone 16 series launch, rumours suggest several design upgrades and new features. The Pro models are expected to feature a glossy titanium finish, offering improved durability and a more luxurious appearance. Display sizes are rumoured to increase, with the iPhone 16 Pro sporting a 6.3-inch screen and the Pro Max boasting a 6.9-inch display, both with slimmer bezels for an enhanced viewing experience.
The new series is anticipated to be powered by Apple’s latest A18 Bionic and A18 Pro processors, promising improved performance and energy efficiency. All models will run on iOS 18, which is expected to introduce advanced AI capabilities, including enhanced Siri functions and new text tools.
