NEW DELHI: After campaigning ended for the ongoing assembly polls with its last phase scheduled on Monday, top BJP leaders on Sunday held marathon meetings with general secretaries and other office bearers to assess the party’s performance in the four states where it has governments and also Punjabthe state party expects to have better prospects.
Party president JP Nadda chaired meeting at BJP headquarters, which was attended by general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh and general secretaries Arun Singh, Dushyant Gautam and Tarun Chug. State general secretaries were connected virtually.
BJP’s internal assessment and ground-level feedback, sources said, have led the party to expect that it is strongly placed in Uttar Pradesh and will retain its government with a comprehensive majority.
In Manipur, Goa and Uttarakhand, the three other states where it had governments, party sources are expecting to retain power.
even as there have been reports of the saffron party’s tightrope walk in the three states.
The meeting on Sunday took place after a long gap as most of the party leaders were busy with polls and had been given responsibilities in different states.
Sources said that contrary to a few reports that there was a serious challenge to the party in Uttar Pradesh, leaders have maintained that the welfare initiatives of the centre coupled with better law and order of the Yogi government have worked decisively in favour of the party.
The seventh and last phase of assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh on Monday include the eight assembly constituencies in Varanasi, which is represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha.
PM Modi and several other leaders including home minister Amit Shah, Nadda, Dharmendra Pradhan, Anurag Thakur, Smriti Irani spent several days in the region and campaigned vigorously for the party candidates.
Mau, Azamgarh, Ghazipur, Janupur, Varanasi, Chandauli, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra and Bhadohi are districts where polling will take place on Monday.
