In 30 days, Vadodara’s Covid deaths higher than Ahmedabad, Gujarat average | Vadodara News – Times of India

VADODARA/ AHMEDABAD: Vadodara at an estimated population of about 22.3 lakh is about 3.5 times smaller than Ahmedabad, but when it came to Covid mortality, in the last 30 days, the Banyan City recorded more deaths than both Ahmedabad and Surat.
From February 3 to March 4, Vadodara recorded 87 deaths – or about 22% of the state’s 389 deaths – compared to Ahmedabad’s Covid mortality of 79. Thus, the Covid mortality rate of Vadodara was 1.2% compared to Ahmedabad’s 0.5% and Gujarat‘s 0.9%.

In fact, even after the major cities had virtually no mortalities from February 22 onwards – the end of the third wave, Vadodara’s deaths trickled in – March 3 was the first day after 38 days when the city had no mortality. Vadodara Municipal Corporation health officer Dr Devesh Patel said that the reporting of deaths took place as and when death audit reports were received. “This leads to a lag in the reporting as compared to the actual day of death,” he said.
Patel added that in the third wave, all deaths were being counted as Covid-19 deaths irrespective of comorbid conditions. Earlier, only deaths were Covid-19 was the primary cause of death were being included.
Sources at Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation also claimed that compared to the second wave, the reporting of deaths in the third wave was more ‘liberal.’
Manoj Aggarwal, ACS (health), told TOI that the state is counting ‘all Covid deaths including comorbid and senior citizen patients.’ “There are no discrepancies between the cities. Yes, it may be true that Vadodara may have recorded higher deaths than Ahmedabad – but the factor could be the cities’ catchment area,” he said.
He said that Vadodara’s hospitals receive patients from Chhota Udepur, Dahod, Panchmahal, etc. where they primarily go to tertiary care centres after their health deteriorates. “Compared to that, the outside patients in Ahmedabad are limited,” said the ACS (health).
Meanwhile, Friday recorded 96 daily Covid cases – daily tally going below 100 after 69 days in Gujarat. The state also recorded zero deaths of active Covid patients after 52 days. Except Ahmedabad, all other cities and districts recorded daily cases below 10.
