Success stories of extraordinary people who fight it out to clear the UPSC civil services exams against all odds are quite common nowadays. But rarely do you come across individuals who pass the examinations and become an IAS officer only to give up the position to help others achieve the same dream. Former IAS from the 1994 batch, Arun Kumar, is currently giving free tutoring to kids who cannot afford to enrol in coaching facilities. Hundreds of UPSC hopefuls have received free coaching sessions from him at the Ganges Bank in Bihar. According to him, no deserving applicant should be denied an opportunity because of financial hardships.

Arun Kumar did his education at St. Xavier’s College in Ranchi and independently prepared for the UPSC IAS competitive test before being recruited by the government. He cracked the UPSC examinations at a time when there was very limited coaching for the examinations. He held his position as an IAS officer for a while but soon he was heavily influenced by his wife Ritu Jaiswal, who is a social worker. Ritu’s penchant for humanitarian activities made Arun Kumar want to do something for society as well.

Arun Jaiswal quit his job to aid kids who couldn’t afford to attend pricey coaching programmes, inspired by his wife’s humanitarian work. To avoid paying for infrastructure, he chose to hold these morning classes outside by the banks of the river Ganges. Students from Purnia, Katihar, and Motihari take classes from Arun Kumar. Many of his students have successfully cleared the exams and are holding respectable positions today.

Erik Solheim, a diplomat from Norway, was one of many who applauded Kumar. A video of the former IAS officer instructing applicants was uploaded by Solheim, who gave him great acclaim.

It is uncommon for an IAS officer to resign from his position, given how much time and effort is needed to pass the exam and this displays Arun Kumar’s penchant for social service and selflessness.
