The 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu said that she has “no idea” whether she will be able to compete at Wimbledon after retiring injured at the Nottingham event on Tuesday.
Britain’s Raducanu retired while trailing 3-4 in the first set against Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland after nearly half an hour into the contest.
Asked if she would be fit for Wimbledon, Raducanu was quoted as saying, “I’ve got no idea.
“It could’ve just seized up and spasmed and then it’s really bad for a few days. But I’ve got no idea. I can’t diagnose myself, so I’ll get it checked out.”
“First game, absolute freak. I think I pulled something. I’m not really sure what exactly happened. I just came off court. It’s on the side of my body. It feels, I don’t know, maybe around my rib or something.”
The 19-year-old Raducanu has been without a full-time coach since April. She shot to fame when she won the US Open title last year and became Britain’s first female Grand Slam champion since Virginia Wade in 1977.
Raducanu has struggled since then, being eliminated in the second round of the 2022 French Open.
She had reached the last 16 of the 2021 Wimbledon, and needs a quick recovery in order to participate in this year’s Wimbledon which will be held from June 27 to July 10.
