David Beckham signed his first professional contract in 1993 with Manchester United.

David Beckham revealed the purchase he made with his first-ever pay cheque at Manchester United. Beckham is an English football icon who was mostly known for his 12-year spell at his boyhood club United. Beckham and his family have witnessed the pinnacle of success, however, the footballer’s journey to the top was far from an easy one. While speaking to SportBible at the premiere of his documentary in London, Beckham said, “I bought a watch. I was earning £27.50 a week. And I probably shouldn’t say the brand of the watch because I have a great brand in Tudor.”

David Beckham came into the limelight once again after the release of his Netflix series on October 4. The series has given the fans an insight into the life of the English footballer and the untalked moments of his journey. The documentary was made jointly with his production company Studio99. In the documentary, Beckham also said that he bought a BMW M3 with his first Adidas contract. The car was valued at £50,000 at the time. His dear friend Gary Neville disclosed that Beckham was an absolute spendthrift at the time. “He’d get his salary on a Friday, spend it all on Saturday, and wait for a week until his next pay cheque to buy the matching jacket to a pair of jeans he’d already bought”, Neville said in the documentary.

David Beckham’s list of expensive purchases seems to be a long one, surprising even the likes of Roy Keane. “He certainly upped everyone’s game in the car park, I’ll give him that”, Keane said while talking about the growing trend of footballers using fancy cars, in the documentary. He then also added that he was a little taken aback by his purchase of a pen. “He also bought a fancy pen. Who buys an expensive pen?” Keane said.

Beckham had joined Manchester United as a trainee in 1991. He made his team debut in the next year before signing his first professional contract in 1993. Beckham announced himself to the world after he scored an impressive goal from the halfway line against AFC Wimbledon. As fame followed, Sir Alex Ferguson had growing concerns about his lifestyle, especially his relationship with Spice Girls singer Victoria Adams. In the infamous dressing room row of 2003, Ferguson kicked a shoe straight into the face of Beckham which was the final nail in the coffin. Post that incident Beckham left for Real Madrid to become a part of the Galatico-era. He departed from Old Trafford having played 394 games and scoring 85 goals.
