Hearing on Ratan Tata’s petition in SC: Tata had called Radia tape leak a violation of privacy, bench sat again after a break of 8 years

Ratan Tata’s petition regarding Right to Privacy will be heard in the Supreme Court. A bench of Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice Hima Kohli and Justice PS Narasimha will hear the matter.

Tata had filed a petition in 2011.
Ratan Tata filed a petition in 2011, making the issue of privacy violations, after the Niira Radia tapes were leaked. It was argued on behalf of Tata that his phone calls were being leaked outside, which is against Article 21(2). The last hearing on this petition was held in 2014.

Income tax department’s investigation report was also sought
During the hearing in this case, Tata had sought to provide a report of recorded conversations in the tapes of corporate lobbyist Niira Radia. During a hearing in 2011, Tata’s lawyer Mukul Rohatgi had asked the court to hand over the investigation report prepared by the Director General of Income Tax Department of the recorded conversations on tapes. So that he can take legal action against the telecom service providers in this matter.

What is Niira Radia Tape Case
Corporate broker used to do public relations work for Niira Radia’s company Tata Group and Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Limited. In 2010, around 800 tapes of Niira Radia’s phone conversations with various industrialists, politicians, officials and journalists were published in the media.

After this conversation, questions were being raised on the role of Nira Radia in the 2G spectrum scam. These tapes also include a phone conversation with the country’s big industrialist Ratan Tata.
