Despite their 2-0 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League, the Reds had to endure the worrisome sight of star full-back Alexander-Arnold leaving the pitch in the first half of the fixture citing a strain.
Premier League table-toppers Liverpool consolidated their position at the head of the standings with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday to open up a five-point lead over the chasing pack in the English domestic season.
However, the Reds faithful had to endure the worrisome sight of star full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving the pitch in the first half of the fixture citing a strain.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot expressed that further inspection was required to determine the extent of the issue following the discomfort he felt during the win over the travelling Villans.
“It’s difficult to say how serious it is, but it’s always serious if a player goes out in the first half,” Slot voiced.
“Not because I didn’t like him, but because he asked for it himself,” the Dutchman added.
He ruled out fatigue as a reason for the Englishman to request for a change and opined that it was difficult to ascertain the severity of a strain right after the game.
“He didn’t ask for it because he was tired, he asked for it because he felt something. That’s first of all not a good sign, but it is always difficult so close after the game to tell you exactly what it is,” the 49-year-old stated.
“Let’s wait and see. I would be surprised if we will see him playing for the England national team this week, but hopefully he can,” he said.
Darwin Nunez’s 20th-minute strike opened the scoring for Slot’s men in their game against Aston Villa before star forward Mohammad Salah doubled their lead with an insurance goal six minutes from time.
Liverpool also lead the standings in the UEFA Champions League 2024-25 season following their resounding 4-0 triumph over Bayern Leverkusen midweek. Colombian winger Luis Diaz was the star on the night as he netted a treble, while Cody Gakpo added the other in the Reds’ rout of former player Xabi Alonso’s men in the revamped iteration of Europe’s top club competition.
