These days the issue of cow smuggling has become very hot in the state of Haryana. 628 Gaushalas have been registered by the government for bovine animals. There are about 4.5 lakh cows in these. Despite this, more than 80 thousand animals are roaming on the roads across the state. Cattle smugglers are making these animals their target in the dark of night.

This has already been disclosed in the intelligence report of the Haryana Police, but even after this no action has been taken in this regard by the government.

More than 350 cases are going on in the court
The Haryana government enacted the Haryana Govansh Sanrakshan and Gosamvardhan (HGS and GS) Act in 2015 to curb cow smuggling and slaughter, but it is not proving to be enough to check the menace because of the low conviction rate. Haryana Police sources said that over 350 cases registered under the Act are pending in various courts across the state.

Cattle coming from neighboring states
Most of the stray cattle in Haryana can be found on the border of Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Therefore, the possibility of them coming to our state from the border states cannot be ruled out. Confirming this, an official of Gau Sewa Aayog has said that local and outside smugglers keep an eye on these cattle.

500 Gaushalas built in 5 years
According to commission officials, a Gau Raksha Bal has been formed in every district to rehabilitate stray cattle in gaushalas and check cattle smuggling. In the last 5 years, more than 500 new gaushalas were built across the state, but many more are still needed to rehabilitate all the stray cattle. Financial grant is also provided according to the number of animals in Gaushalas.

Crowd of animals in cowsheds
A ‘cow protector’ from Haryana claimed that most gaushalas in the state were overcrowded, while some were cattle sheds where cows were left on the streets after milking. Told that these cattle are the target of cow smugglers, who also took the help of local people to locate such animals and managed to smuggle them at night taking advantage of the nominal security arrangements.
