Gujarat sees 80% spike with 2,265 daily Covid cases, 5 IAS officials positive | Rajkot News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD/ GANDHINAGAR: Gujarat recorded a major spike in daily Covid cases on Tuesday right ahead of the big-ticket Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) and its pre-events beginning from Wednesday.
In 24 hours ending 5 pm on Tuesday, the state added 2,265 new Covid cases – the highest in the past 221 days or seven months. Compared to Monday’s tally of 1,259, it was an 80% daily jump – the highest in the past seven days.
Five key IAS officers of Gujarat cadre including two top health and family welfare department functionaries tested positive or are suspected to have infection following symptoms. The officials included Manoj Aggarwal, additional chief secretary (health & family welfare), Rajkumar Beniwal, commissioner of municipalities administration and MD of GUDC; J P Gupta, principal secretary (finance), Hareet Shukla, tourism secretary, and Jai Prakash Shivahare, state health commissioner.
CMO sources said that all five have tested positive for Covid-19. Manoj Aggarwal, J P Gupta and Hareet Shukla have tested positive for the second time. They were first infected during the second wave. All five are playing key roles in organizing VGGS or fighting Covid in the state. Ahmedabad city emerged as the epicenter of the massive spike as the daily cases doubled in the past 24 hours from 631 on Monday to 1,290 on Tuesday. The city accounted for 57% of the daily cases in the state – the highest for any city in the past six months.
Ahmedabad’s TPR among Top 5 in country
An analysis of the weekly test positivity rate (TPR) by the Union ministry of health & family welfare indicated that Ahmedabad’s TPR for the week December 28-January 3 was 6.5% – finding 65 positive patients every 1,000 tests carried out. It was among the top five in cities with over 30 lakh population.
In comparison, Delhi had TPR of 6.4%, Chennai 4.9%, Bengaluru 2.2% and Hyderabad 0.3%. The top TPRs included Kolkata (38%), Mumbai (13.9%), Gurugram (8.9%) and Thiruvananthapuram (7.7%) among others.
Keeping in mind the constantly rising cases in the state, the members of Indian Medical Association (IMA)’s Gujarat branch urged the state government to prevent major public events, and decrease capacity of the malls/ multiplexes/ restaurants, etc. to 50% for some time to break the chain. They also advised stringent checks on airports and improved vaccination across the state.
