Gopal Krishna Gandhi, the former governor of West Bengal and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, has refused to be a candidate for the presidential election. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had proposed to become the Presidential candidate in a meeting of opposition parties.

Gopalkrishna Gandhi said about this- After considering this matter deeply, I see that the candidate of the opposition should be the one who creates national consensus and national atmosphere apart from opposition unity. I think there will be more people who will do this better than me.

June 29 is the last date for nominations
Earlier, Sharad Pawar and Farooq Abdullah have also refused to be presidential candidates. Nominations can be made for the post of President till June 29. Now less than 10 days are left for the nomination, while all the three faces suggested by the opposition have refused to contest the elections.

Voting for the presidential election will be held on July 18. The name of the new President will be announced only after the counting is over on July 21. The term of Ram Nath Kovind, who was elected President in 2017, ends on July 24. He is the 15th President of the country.

NDA seeks support from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha
