BJP is almost certain to form the government in the country’s smallest state Goa. It has won 20 seats and is just one seat behind the majority. It has also got the support of independents. On the other hand, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has got entry in the assembly for the first time. Two of its candidates have won, but Amit Palekar, who was made the CM face by party chief Arvind Kejriwal, has lost the election.

  • Both the deputy CMs of BJP lost. Manohar Ajgaonkar was defeated by Digambar Kamat of INC by around 6000 votes and Chandrakant Kevalekar by Alton D’Costa of INC by around 3000 votes.
  • The TMC, which reached Goa three months before the elections, lost all 26 seats. It got only 5.21% of the vote. Its ally MGP got 7.72% of the vote.
  • Congress’s Michael Lobo won in Lengut and BJP’s Mavin H Godinho won from Dabolim.
  • CM Pramod Sawant won from Sankelim by 666 votes. He defeated Dharmesh Sagalani of INC.
  • Goa Forward Party chief Vijay Sardesai won from Fatorda seat.

Father brought BJP to power, son lost by fighting as an independent
Late BJP leader and former state Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s son Utpal Parrikar was in the fray from Panaji seat. If BJP did not give ticket, he went to the field as an independent. In front of him were Atanasio Monserrate of the BJP and Elvis Gomes of the Congress. It was because of Utpal that the contest became triangular, but Monserrate defeated him by 710 votes.

Last time BJP formed the government even after bringing 4 seats less than the Congress.
Goa had a hung assembly last time. Congress got 17 and BJP got 13 seats. It was almost certain that the Congress would form the government with the help of independents, but the BJP claimed first and was successful in grabbing power. This time 301 candidates contested the elections here. Of these 40 candidates were from BJP, 37 from Congress, 39 from AAP, 26 from TMC, 13 from MGP and 68 independents. 11.56 lakh voters decided their victory or defeat.
