Goa: GMC’s super-specialty block to be dedicated to Covid battle | Goa News – Times of India

PANAJI: Health minister Vishwajit Rane said on Sunday that GMC’s super-specialty hospital would be fully dedicated for Covid patients.
Speaking on the state’s readiness as cases rise sharply, he said, “All hospitals are ready, and we have separate facilities for isolation, mild cases, etc.”
The state’s Covid task force chaired by the chief minister is likely to meet on Monday to discuss the rise in cases and take a decision on how to curb the spread of Covid as well as take into consideration the recommendations made by the expert committee.
The acute bed shortage during the devastating second wave forced authorities to belatedly open the super specialty block to Covid patients, after pressure from the high court.
Referring to the upcoming assembly election, Rane said that the Union government will issue appropriate directions, and these will be implemented in Goa.
Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya held a video conference with state health ministers to discuss Covid situation and management. The conference was attended by Rane, the state health secretary, and the GMC dean, among others. At the meeting, Rane said that due to the fact that Goa is a tourist destination, there’s a load on the state.
“I said at the meeting that we have standard operating procedures (SOP) put in place, and at the same time, the Union government should issue a general SOP for the country,” he said, adding that the Omicron-led Covid-19 spike in the US, Spain, UK and India was also discussed.
Rane said that people should take precautions, wear masks, and maintain social distancing.
All of Goa’s Omicron suspects are quarantined at the state quarantine facilities.
The state is currently using the health centre at Cansaulim with a capacity of 18, TB hospital Margao with a capacity of 16, and the health centre at Aldona with a capacity of eight beds. The Curchorem health centre with 30 beds will also be used as a state quarantine facility.
