The month of Sawan is going on. It is said that this month is dear to Lord Shiva, so in this month people worship and perform Jalabhishek to please Shiva. In this month, people take kanwar and go to offer water to the Jyotirlinga, many even go on foot according to their ability. On fulfillment of some wishes, some take a vow and come to worship Baba. Be that as it may, the devotees of Lord Bhole reach at his rate.

How did Kanwar start? travel practice

According to Kartik Nath Thakur, General Secretary of Panda Dharmarakshini Sabha, Deoghar, the practice of Kanwar Yatra is thousands of years old. According to the scriptures, Lord Shri Ram started this practice and offered water to the Jyotirlinga. Apart from this, it is also said that Parashuram, the supreme devotee of Lord Shiva, did this Kanwar Yatra for the first time in the month of Sawan itself. It is said that the devotees who complete this yatra get the same virtue as the Ashwamedha Yagya. Most people perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva by taking Ganges water from Gomukh, Gangotri, Rishikesh and Haridwar. The kanwar that the devotees carry is made of bamboo. The pots are tied on both the ends of it, which contains Gangajal. By filling these pots with Gangajal, the Kanwar Yatra is completed on foot. Some people travel barefoot only, while some people use vehicles according to their convenience.

According to the belief, water is offered to the Jyotirlinga by filling water in Kanwar. Talking about the famous Jyotirlinga Baidyanath Dham (also known as Deoghar) of Jharkhand, people first make a resolution by filling Ganga water from Sultanganj and then reach the Dham according to their ability. On the other hand, if we talk about Vishwanath Jyotirlinga located in Varanasi, due to being the Uttaraani of the Ganges river, water is filled from there and offered to Baba Vishwanath only, from there water is not filled and offered to any other Jyotirlinga.

The river Ganga flowing in Varanasi is Uttarayani, so the water filled from there is offered only in Vishwanath temple.

But after this he will have to take a bath before lifting the kanwar again, only after that he can start his journey back. It is forbidden to take meat, liquor or any kind of vengeful food during the journey. One has to observe celibacy for the whole month
