World No. 3 Alexander Zverev came up with a stunning match of tennis to beat one of the pre-tournament favourites and Spanish sensation, Carlos Alcaraz, in the men’s singles quarter-final at French Open 2022 on Tuesday. The German star stormed into his second successive semi-final at the Roland Garros after his first win over a top-10 player in his Grand Slam journey.

Alexander Zverev defeated Carlos Alcaraz 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7) in a quarter-final that lasted 3 hours and 18 minutes to end the Spanish teenager’s dream run on clay. Zverev proved his naysayers wrong as he was not talked about much in the lead-up to the French Open.

Alcaraz, who won the Madrid Open after beating Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to make heads turn, fought back after going down 2 sets but it was not enough as Zverev upped his ante.

“He is going to win this tournament a lot of times, not just once. I hope I have a chance to win this tournament before he starts beating us all in the French Open,” Zverev paid a beautiful tribute to Alcaraz.

The Spanish youngster, who is touted as the next big thing, handled his defeat with grace as he spoke to Zverev at the net and acknowledged the support from the crowd before he walked his way into the tunnel.

Zverev will take on the winner of the 2nd quarter-final between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in the French Open 2022 semi-final.
