Former DGP of Punjab Police Sumedh Saini has appeared before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Chandigarh. He is being questioned by the SIT of Punjab Police in the 2015 Kotkapura shooting case. This shooting is related to sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Where the police had opened fire on the Sikh Sangat protesting against the sacrilege. Saini was the DGP of Punjab at that time. Saini is being asked about on whose orders the police fired on the day of the incident.

Summons after dismissal of petition from High Court
Sumedh Saini and other accused had filed a petition in the High Court. In which there was a demand to transfer this case to a central agency. However, the High Court rejected it. After which the SIT headed by ADGP LK Yadav sent summons to Saini for questioning.

High Court asked to speed up the investigation
The High Court, while dismissing Saini’s plea, had asked the Punjab Police to expedite the investigation into the Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan shootings in 2015. The investigation of the Kotkapura shooting is being led by the ADGP. At the same time, the team led by IG Naunihal Singh is investigating the Behbal Kalan shooting incident.

Saini had asked for 3 weeks time
Earlier, Sumedh Saini was called for questioning about 25 days ago. At that time he had asked for 3 weeks’ time. Saini had sent a letter to the SIT. In which he said that he is in Delhi in case of any court case, so cannot appear. After that today he has been called again.
