Yesterday’s big news was heavy rains in the North Western states and the devastation caused by it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Chief Ministers of Himachal and Uttarakhand. He has assured help to the affected states.

  1. There will be a hearing in the Supreme Court against the release of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano gangrape case. In the last hearing, one of the accused did not appear in the court.
  2. The Supreme Court will hear more than 20 petitions challenging the Central Government’s decision to remove Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir.

1. Heavy rains in 7 states, 56 killed; Flood threat in Delhi, loss of 4 thousand crores in Himachal

There are flood situations due to rain in the northern states of the country including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal. 56 people have died in separate incidents of landslides and floods in 7 states. Punjab and Haryana have sought the help of the Army to rescue the flood-affected people. Yamuna is flowing above the danger mark in Delhi. Due to the rains in Himachal, there has been a loss of about 4 thousand crores so far.

Why this news is important: Himachal CM Sukhu has demanded the Central Government to declare it as a national calamity in view of the damage caused by the rains. A total of 1300 roads including National Highway and Link Road are affected here. All schools in Punjab and Chandigarh are closed till July 13. 24 trains running on the Delhi-Ambala route have been cancelled.

2. ₹ 2000 notes will continue to be exchanged without ID proof; Petition against RBI’s decision dismissed
2000 notes will continue to be exchanged without any ID proof. The Supreme Court gave this order while dismissing that petition. In which the order of RBI to exchange notes without ID proof was challenged. The court told the petitioner’s lawyer that if you give 2000 note to the vegetable seller, he asks for ID proof from you.

Why this news is important: The Delhi High Court had also said in its judgment on May 29 that this is a policy decision of the RBI. The court should not interfere in this. Actually, RBI had announced to withdraw 2000 note from circulation from 23 May. The last date to change them is 30 September 2023.

Twitter showed Gilgit-Baltistan as a part of India on its platform. Users here said that despite being in Gilgit, Twitter was showing their location in Jammu and Kashmir. Users were also unable to see the official Twitter handle of the Government of Pakistan. Because Twitter blocked them.

Why this news is important: The part of India which has been occupied by Pakistan since 1947, only 15% of the area is in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). 85% is in Gilgit-Baltistan. The seats are still kept vacant in our Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

5. VIDEO of thrashing a Dalit youth naked in MP; Kamal Nath complained to the governor

A video surfaced of a Dalit youth being stripped naked and mercilessly beaten up in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh. The video is said to be about 8 months old. Former Chief Minister Kamal Nath along with Congress MLAs met Governor Mangubhai Patel regarding such incidents happening in the state. He complained to the Governor that daily new cases of atrocities on tribals are coming to the fore.

Why this news is important: In the past, many such incidents of harassment have come to the fore in Madhya Pradesh. These include Sidhi’s urination incident and incidents of fighting with tribal boys in Indore. Assembly elections are due in the state this year. In such a situation, the Congress has become strict regarding the cases of harassment.

6. Bengal Panchayat election results today, yesterday re-voting was held at 697 booths

There were several incidents of violence and booth capturing in the panchayat elections on July 8 in West Bengal. After this, the Election Commission conducted re-voting at 697 booths in 19 districts. 69.85% voting took place here till 5 pm. The counting of votes will start today. The results are expected by 4 pm.

Why this news is important: Elections were held on 64,874 gram panchayat seats in West Bengal. Candidates for 9,013 seats were elected unopposed. Of these, maximum 8,874 are from Trinamool Congress. During the voting on July 8, 17 people died in violent incidents in more than 19 districts.

French publication ‘Liberation’ has claimed that Putin had met Wagner Chief Prigogine twice. Both the meetings took place on 24 June after the failed mutiny attempt. In the second meeting, Prigogine was given the task of killing Zelensky.

Why this news is important: According to the claim, the first meeting between Prigogine and Putin took place on 29 June and the second meeting on 1 July. Prigogine has been told to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and bring his head to the Kremlin. This claim was made by Nobel Prize winner Dmitry Muratov on a YouTube channel.
