Fight over ‘real Shiv Sena’ continues as SC stays disqualification of rebels | Top points

The ongoing Maharashtra political crisis reached the Supreme Court on Monday. In a big relief to Eknath Shinde camp, the Supreme Court ordered a status quo on disqualification proceedings against the rebel MLAs till July 11.

Meanwhile, sources said that Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray tried to resign from the top post on Monday, but was stopped from doing so by NCP chief Sharad Pawar.

Here are the top developments in the story:

1) The Supreme Court issued notices to Deputy Speaker, Secretary of Maharashtra State Legislative Assembly, Centre and others on pleas filed by rebel MLAs against the disqualification notice issued by the Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal against Eknath Shinde and 15 other rebel legislators. The Supreme Court also issued notices to Shiv Sena leaders Ajay Chaudhary, Sunil Prabhu and asked them to file a reply within five days. The Supreme Court has listed the plea for hearing on July 11.

2) The SC kept on hold the disqualification proceedings against rebel Sena MLAs till July 11 and sought responses to pleas by them questioning the legality of notices issued by the Deputy Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly. Following the court order, Eknath Shinde said that it is the victory of Balasaheb’s ideology.

“This is a win of Hindutva of Balasaheb Thackeray and the ideas of Anand Dighe,” Eknath Shinde tweeted with the hashtag ‘realshivsenawins’.

3) Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut hit out at the Sena rebels who said that they would die for Balasaheb Thackeray’s Hindutva. He said: “We all know who left and who died for the Hindutva cause.”

4) Rebel MLA and Minister Rajendra Patil Yadravkar supporters and Shiv Sena supporters confronted each other at Jaisingpur in Kolhapur district. Police detained demonstrators after the situation got tense.

5) Amid the ongoing political tussle in Maharashtra, Sena MP Sanjay Raut was summoned by the ED on Tuesday in connection with a money laundering case. Terming the summons a “conspiracy”, Sanjay Raut said, “I knew ED is going to summon me, I won’t kneel down. I’m Balasaheb’s Shiv Sainik and I’ll stay with my party. I’ll not appear before ED tomorrow. I will seek time from ED.”

6) Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray tried to resign twiceincluding on Monday, but was convinced against it by NCP chief Sharad Pawar, as per sources.

7) Meanwhile, rebel Shiv Sena MLA Eknath Shide spoke to MNS chief Raj Thackeray over the phone twice yesterday, said an MNS leader, adding that the rebel leader spoke about the recent political situation in Maharashtra and enquired about his health.

8) Maharashtra BJP core committee held a meeting at Devendra Fadnavis’ residence on Monday to discuss the present political situation in the state. Sources said that the party leadership has asked BJP workers to be on standby as they would be needed to go to the airport and welcome rebel MLAs when they return.
