CHANDIGARH: In a significant development, the Haryana government on Friday formally started the process to withdraw police cases registered against farmers during the farmers’ protest.
Sources said ACS home Rajiv Arora has written to the district magistrates across the state to provide complete details of cases registered against farmers in their areas since September 9, 2020. According to information, there are over 450 such cases, which include those of heinous, compoundable and non-compoundable in nature, against farmers registered till November this year. Some of the cases included those of murders, attempt to murder, obstructing government servants from discharging their duties, sedition and under the Arms Act.
Besides seeking details, the district magistrates have also been asked to give comment on the status of cases like whether cases are registered under bailable, non-bailable sections and the process to be followed for withdrawal.
Some of the cases can be withdrawn by following a process and by permission of a trial court. While, the cases having non-bailable and noncompoundable sections cannot be withdrawn till they are decided.
Replying to a question in recently concluded winter session of Haryana assembly, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar had said that there are four cases of heinous crimes like rape and murder, while in 178 cases, reports have been filed in trial courts, 57 cases are untraced and police have so far prepared the cancellation report in eight cases.
“Besides, we have initiated the cancellation process in 69 more cases. While those cases which are not in court, we have asked the DC and SP to initiate the process for withdrawal,” said a senior official of the home department.
Farmers had suspended the protests after three farm laws were repealed in both houses of the Parliament and had agreed to return home after the government assured to withdraw police cases, besides looking into other demands.
