Farmer gets Rs 2 for 512 kg onions: Crop bought at Re 1 kg, Rs 2 left after deducting freight

Such a case has come to light from Maharashtra, from which the condition of the farmers in the country can be estimated. A farmer from Solapur district had gone 70 km away to sell onions, but his 512 kg onions were bought at just Re 1 per kg.

In this way, the farmer got Rs.512 for his crop, in which he was given a check of Rs.2 after deducting the cost of transporting the crop to the market. The trader says that the quality of the farmer’s onion was poor.

The farmer went to sell onions 70 km away
Rajendra Tukaram Chavan, 58, a resident of Borgaon in Barshi taluka of Solapur district, cultivates onions. On February 17, they had reached the Solapur market, which is 70 km from the farmer’s home, with 512 kg of onions in the hope of getting a good price for the crop.

But here APMC (Agricultural Produce Market Committee) traders told their crop to be of poor quality. Even after trying a lot, when Rajendra Tukaram did not get the right price for the crop, he finally sold the crop at Re 1 per kg.

Rajendra Tukaram told that I had received Rs 512 in exchange for the crop, out of which Rs 509.50 was deducted for the fare and loading of the crop to reach the market. After this Rs 2.49 was left, so the merchant handed over a check of Rs 2 to Rajendra. Now the video related to this and the photo of the check are going viral on social media.

The farmer said- Crop prepared in 40 thousand
Rajendra says that last year he got a price of Rs 20 per kg for onions. The cost of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides has doubled in the last 3-4 years. This time around 40 thousand rupees were spent to grow only 500 kg onions.

Onion was of poor quality: trader
Solapur APMC trader Nasir Khalifa, who bought onions from the farmer, told that the quality of Rajendra’s onions was poor. Earlier, he had brought good quality onions in two consignments, so we had given him Rs 18 per kg once and Rs 14 the second time.
