South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi faced the wrath of Indian fans after poking fun at Suryakumar Yadav’s iconic catch in the T20 World Cup 2024 final. Nearly two months after the nail-biting thriller in Barbados, Shamsi reshared a video from a local cricket game in India on X.

The players could be seen closely verifying the legitimacy of a catch bearing a striking resemblance to the one Suryakumar took in the West Indies. In the video, the batter smashes the delivery towards mid-on. One of the fielders rushed towards the ball before completing the catch very close to the boundary line. He then signals others to come and check if his catch is legal. During a prolonged inspection, players used the bat and a rope to check the catch’s legitimacy. It was found out that the catch wasn’t clear, helping the batter survive.

Tabraiz Shamsi decided to pile on the humour with his T20 World Cup reference but it just didn’t sit too well with the fans. He made a light remark saying, “If they used this method to check the catch in the World Cup final maybe it would have been given not out.”

Shamsi’s post wasn’t welcomed by the Indian fans, as they flocked to the comments section and bashed the South African cricketer.

South Africa required 16 runs in the final six balls to win the trophy in Barbados in the T20 World Cup 2024 final. With David Miller at the crease, the Proteas still had a good chance of winning their maiden World Cup title.

However, the southpaw was sent packing after hitting a Hardik Pandya delivery towards long-off that ended in a catch. Suryakumar showed brilliant presence of mind to toss the ball in the air after going past the boundary line. Moments later he sprinted back to get the catch. The scalp proved crucial as India went on to win the fixture by seven runs.
