The rating is decided by the energy efficiency ratio.
Each AC has an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) mentioned on it. If the EER is mentioned on the AC from 2.7 to 2.9, it is a one-star rating, 2.9 to 3.09 is two stars, 3.1 to 3.29 is three stars, 3.3 to 3.49 is four stars, and a rating above 3.5 is 5- is. Stars. The cooling output and input power of the AC must be calculated to determine the energy efficiency ratio. This can be checked while buying AC, which is written on the plate. Know AC Rating
Since all ACs are of one ton and their cooling output is 3516 watts. This output will give the division of the input. For example, if an AC is taking 1250 watts of input power, then if you divide 1250 by 3516, the result is 2.00. If you look it up in the EER table, you will get 2.00 as a one star rating. Hence this AC is of one star rating. Similarly, if the input power of AC is 11750 watts, then dividing by 3516 will give 2.99. Looking at the table, a rating of 2.9 to 3.09 is a two-star rating. In this way the rating of all stars can be calculated.
The less input power the AC takes, the higher will be its star rating. Power consumption increases with input power. Hence AC with higher rating consumes less power.
