Esther Duflo, Raghuram Rajan, Arvind Subramaniam and Jean Dreze among economic advisors for Tamil Nadu

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government on June 21 constituted a five-member economic advisory panel to the chief minister, including French economist Esther Duflo and former Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan.

Nobel laureate economist Esther Duflo and former RBI governor will guide the CM. MK Stalin in controlling the economic and social policies of the state.

They are former top economic advisor to the central government Arvind Subramaniam and development economist Jean Dreze and former Union finance secretary S. Narayan joined the council.

Duflo of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology shared the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences with Abhijit Banerjee and Michael Kremer “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty”.

Rajan, who is a professor at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business after leaving RBI in 2016, will guide the rate-setting panel.

According to the TN governor, paying attention to its respective financial health; Tamil Nadu government has come up with this panel of experts to revive the economy of the state.

In his address to the state assembly, Mr. Purohit said, “Based on the council’s recommendation, the government will revive the state’s economy and ensure that the benefits of economic development reach all sections of the society.”
