The 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu retired injured from her opening match in the WTA 250 tournament in Nottingham on Tuesday.
Britain’s Raducanu retired while trailing 3-4 in the first set against Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland after nearly half an hour into the contest.
Raducanu has suffered what appeared to be an abdominal or rib injury, casting doubt on her participation at Wimbledon, Reuters reported.
The 19-year-old Raducanu has been without a full-time coach since April. She shot to fame when she won the US Open title last year and became Britain’s first female Grand Slam champion since Virginia Wade in 1977.
Raducanu has struggled since then, being eliminated in the second round of the 2022 French Open.
She had reached the last 16 of the 2021 Wimbledon, and needs a quick recovery in order to participate in this year’s Wimbledon which will be held from June 27 to July 10.
