First the upper part of the hotel is being demolished. Several personnel have been deployed to break it. The road has been blocked near Hotel Malari Inn. Police and State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) officials have also been deployed to ensure that work is not disrupted.

The demolition work of the hotel is being done under the supervision of the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) Roorkee. CBRI Chief Scientist DP Kanungo said that the hotel cannot be repaired. There are houses around both the hotels, so it is necessary to demolish them. The hotel will collapse further, which will cause more damage. That’s why they will be dropped as soon as possible. Mechanical dismantling techniques are being used for this.

He said that we will not use any type of heavy vibrating machine here. Special training has been given to the workers. We have to save the land. We are trying to ensure that there is minimum or no vibration inside the ground. Earlier on Wednesday, after getting information about the demolition of the hotel, the owner sat on a dharna along with the family members demanding compensation.

Thakur Singh Rana, the owner of Hotel Malari Inn, had said – There is so much pressure from the adjacent hotel building that my hotel is about to collapse. I am helpless, I cannot say anything. Can anyone be happy if their hotel is being demolished? Till now there has been no talk about compensation with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, I have no information about compensation.

Now one and a half lakh help to the affected people in Joshimath
In Joshimath, the residents of 723 houses which have developed cracks will be given assistance of Rs 1.5 lakh. 50 thousand rupees will be given for shifting and one lakh rupees will be given as advance of compensation. What will be the final compensation, it will be decided later. The survey will be completed in a week and after that this help will be given.

Joshimath divided into three zones
The state government has decided to divide Joshimath into three zones. These zones will be – Danger, Buffer and Safe Zone. There will be such houses in the danger zone which are very dilapidated and not fit for habitation. Such houses will be demolished manually, while those in the safe zone will have mild cracks and are less prone to collapse. Those houses in the buffer zone will have minor cracks but are prone to crack growth. A team of experts has recommended the demolition of houses with cracks.

Joshimath and surrounding area sinking every year
A two-year study by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing revealed that land in and around Joshimath was sinking at a rate of 2.5 inches every year. This study has been done by the Dehradun-based institute using satellite data. Satellite images collected from July 2020 to March 2022 show that the entire region is slowly sinking. The data shows that the subsidence zone is spread across the valley and is not confined to Joshimath.
