The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is testing and exploring high-tech, AI-enabled UAVs for the next level of operations in Jammu and Kashmir and against Naxals amid a spate of attacks by terrorists. The process of testing the advanced UAVs is underway, with trials being conducted to get the next generation of drones with more capabilities.

These UAVs will not only require minimal human intervention but will also be capable of performing surveillance, reconnaissance, and operations without delay based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, a senior CRPF official said.

“These drones will have an ‘eye in the sky,’ AI, and digital vision. With the incorporation of digital vision into drones, these machines will be capable of autonomous navigation, making quick decisions, and performing precise tasks without human input with the help of AI,” a senior official told News18.

Officials aware of the trials and demonstrations said the decision to purchase UAVs with Automatic Target Recognition (ATR), which can identify targets and execute commands, is yet to be made. Currently, the army is using such drones. These AI-enabled UAVs can identify and target weapons, vehicles, and other objects, processing data in real time and transmitting it to the control room. The drones feature AI-based ATR, which enables them to recognise targets such as tanks, guns, vehicles, and humans and relay this data to the control station in real time.

Currently, the CRPF has close to 250 UAVs deployed in operational areas for Intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) operations. However, most of these drones use older technology and have limited capabilities. Considering the challenges in Jammu and Kashmir and in jungle warfare, the CRPF is exploring ways to expand its UAV technology to incorporate AI capabilities.

Existing drones can take photos and perform reconnaissance but have very short flight durations and operate at low altitudes, which makes them vulnerable. They cannot participate in or assist with anti-terror operations, especially in hilly areas. The force is now focusing on jungle and mountain warfare, which will require more advanced technology.

In response to changes in terrorist strategies, forces in J&K are planning to adapt their positions and strategies according to current requirements. Jammu will be a primary focus, especially high-altitude areas that are witnessing ambushes and attacks on the Army. There have been five attacks in the past few weeks, including an attack on a bus carrying pilgrims and an ambush on Indian Army vehicles.
