AHMEDABAD: An analysis of road traffic accidents (RTAs) calls received by the EMRI 108 emergency service indicates that compared to 2019 – the pre-pandemic year – there was a 14% dip in calls in 2021.
After pregnancy-related calls, the RTAs are the second most common reason for citizens to contact the emergency services.
A senior analyst said that the impact of the pandemic was clearly visible.
Compared to 1,360 calls in January 2021, the monthly call volume reduced to 320 in April. It reached 1,572 in December. The third wave, however, did not have much of an impact with the services receiving, on average, 48 calls from the city for RTAs compared to 51 in December when Covid cases were relatively very low.
The analysis also indicates that the top five accident hotspots were in the western city parts with ambulances at Bodakdev and Prahladnagar getting the highest number of annual calls at 463 and 435 respectively.
In all, Ahmedabad had recorded 18,564 calls in 2019, 13,721 in 2020, and 15,966 in 2021.
