Covid deaths in Maharashtra vault to 86. Weekend numbers added: Official | Mumbai News – Times of India

MUMBAI: The state added a steep 86 deaths, the highest in 110 days since October 6 (90), on Tuesday. So far in the third Covid wave, the state had reported a maximum of 53 deaths on January 18. A day after a drop in cases, the state also recorded a rise in daily detection to 33,914 cases on Tuesday.
“This rise is mainly due to late reporting of deaths from some districts, especially over the weekend,” said a senior official. Of the total deaths, 39 were from the Mumbai region, and 28 were from the Pune region.
Mumbai, for the second day in a row, reported fewer than 2,000 cases. Tuesday’s tally of 1,815 came off 34,427 tests, which is lower than usual. The test positivity rate remained in the 5% range – almost half of last week’s positivity rate.
Mumbai’s daily toll remained stable at 11. “The wave is moving to tier-II cities and towns and some of these patients could come to Mumbai for care. This means the city has to stay alert. People need to keep their masks on, maintain social distance and avoid crowded places,” said Dr Rahul Pandit, a member of the state government’s task force on Covid-19. Pandit warned the cold wave in the city could lead to a resurgence of viral fever.
At the moment, the number of patients in hospitals has dropped drastically. According to the BMC update, there are 3,474 hospitalised patients occupying only 9.1% of the total Covid hospital beds in the city. “In Sion hospital, we have 12 patients and most of them are people who came with some other health problems and were diagnosed with Covid-19,” said Sion hospital dean Dr Mohan Joshi. According to the BMC protocol, most Covid patients are directed to either Seven Hills Hospital in Andheri or any of the jumbo field hospitals.
Active cases in the state and city continue to rise. The total active cases in the state crossed the 3-lakh mark, of which 22,185 are from Mumbai. Districts like Pune, Thane and Nagpur have more active cases than Mumbai. Pune district has over 93,000 active cases, followed by 31,000-plus active cases in Thane district.
Maharashtra has a capacity of carrying out 2 lakh tests every day and the state is using its full capacity at the moment. There is a gradual rise in oxygen demand, but the situation is not alarming. As long as the cities which have high vaccine coverage are affected, there may not be a jump in hospitalisation. The problem will start only when the cases reach rural areas, where vaccination is low,” said an official.
