Corpn Launches Work To Clean Sanganoor Canal | Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: The city corporation has resumed cleaning Sanganoor canal, which functions as a stormwater drainage system.
Cleaning works launched at the end of November were put on hold due to monsoon showers, a corporation official said. “We resumed the work recently and will complete it in one-and-a-half years,” he said.
The corporation council had recently approved appointment of a project management consultant to supervise the work. The consultant will work closely with the corporation and the contractor to ensure that the project is carried out as per the plan.
The project aims to clean the canal, strengthen bunds and lay roads along it to ease traffic congestion. Cleaning and development works will be carried out for 3.3km between Mettupalayam Road and Sathyamangalam Road at a cost of 79.3 crore. While the state government will contribute 49.9 crore from the infrastructure and amenities fund, the remaining 29.3 crore will be contributed by the civic body.
“A segment of work will be carried out for 2,300 metres at a cost of 49 crore and work on the remaining 1,000 metres will be carried out at a cost of 30.3 crore,” said an official with the engineering department of the corporation.
The civic body will need to remove encroachments on the bunds of the canal to carry out the work. “More than 500 houses will be removed. The Tamil Nadu urban habitat development board and the city corporation are working in tandem to provide the residents alternative accommodation,” the official added.
Initially, the project was proposed at a cost of 575 crore to develop the canal between Mettupalayam Road and Trichy Road, covering 11.5km. But that didn’t take off.
