Congress candidate Jagat Singh Negi has scored a hat-trick on the only assembly seat in Himachal’s Kinnaur district and won for the third time. He has defeated BJP candidate Surat Negi.

Competition in Negi
The big faces in the fray this time from Kinnaur seat include Congress candidate Jagat Singh Negi, BJP candidate Surat Negi and Tejwant Singh Negi, who is contesting as an independent.

Tejwant Singh Negi had lost the 2012 and 2017 elections from this seat on BJP ticket, so this time the party has replaced him with new face Surat Negi. After this, Tejwant Singh Negi became a rebel and entered the election.

Jagat Singh Negi is the sitting MLA from here. This time there was talk of his ticket being cut and the Congress party kept his ticket on hold till the end. Although in the end Jagat Singh Negi managed to get the ticket. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has nominated Tarsem Singh from this seat.

Seat won by lowest margin in 2017
Congress’s Jagat Singh Negi won this seat in 2012 and 2017 assembly elections and this time he wants to score a hat-trick. In the 2017 assembly elections here, Jagat Singh Negi of INC got 20029 votes while Tejwant Singh Negi of BJP got 19909 votes in front of him. Jagat Singh Negi emerged victorious with a margin of 120 votes in that close contest between the two. In the 2017 assembly elections, the Kinnaur seat was decided by the lowest margin in Himachal.

Strong Room in Reckong Peo
After the polling on November 12, a strong room was set up at Reckong Peo, the district headquarters, for the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) of the Kinnaur assembly seat. Paramilitary force is stationed outside this strong room for 24 hours since 12th November. As per the instructions of the Election Commission, after the completion of the counting, all the EVMs will be kept at the district headquarters where their data will be kept safe for 45 days.
