‘Confident That India-UK Ties Will Be Strengthened Under Your Leadership’: PM Modi To Liz Truss

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes to UK Foreign Minister and Conservative Party leader Liz Truss after she was elected as the next UK Prime Minister on Monday. “Congratulations Liz Truss for being chosen to be the next PM of the UK. Confident that under your leadership, the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will be further strengthened. Wish you the very best for your new role and responsibilities,” PM said on his official Twitter handle.

The party’s Sir Graham Brady announced the results at the Queen Elizabeth II Center in Westminster. Truss was in competition with Rishi Sunak. However, for the last few days, there were speculations that the majority is with the Truss.

Truss got 81,326 votes while Sunak got 60,399 votes. The truss will meet the Queen at Balmoral tomorrow, who will invite her to form the government. After this Truss will become the Prime Minister.

In her speech, Truss first thanked her supporters. She thanked his party for “organizing the longest job interview in history”.

“I am honoured to be elected Leader of the Conservative Party. Thank you for putting your trust in me to lead and deliver for our great country. I will take bold action to get all of us through these tough times, grow our economy, and unleash the United Kingdom’s potential,” she said in a tweet.

“I’ll deliver a bold plan to cut taxes & grow our economy, on the energy crisis & long-term issues on energy supply & National Health Service…& we’ll deliver a great victory for the Conservative Party in 2024,” said Liz Truss after being named as the next PM.

The 47-year-old senior Cabinet minister made visits to India and held virtual talks with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, during which she described the country as a “big, major opportunity”.

“I see the UK and India in a sweet spot of the trade dynamics that are building up,” said Truss soon after signing the ETP.

“We are looking at a comprehensive trade agreement that covers everything, from financial services to legal services to digital and data, as well as goods and agriculture. We think there is strong possibility for us to get an early agreement, where we lower tariffs on both sides and start to see more goods flowing between our two countries,” she said.
