Coimbatore DIG Vijayakumar commits suicide: asks gunman for pistol, then shoots himself; Told the close ones – I am under stress

C Vijayakumar was an IPS officer of 2009 batch.

In Tamil Nadu, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Coimbatore range C Vijayakumar committed suicide. He shot himself with the service revolver. According to the police, DIG Vijayakumar ended his life at around 6:15 am in a house built in Red Fields of the city.

The reasons why he took this step are being ascertained. According to his colleagues, he had said that he was under stress for the last few days.

The body of 45-year-old Vijayakumar has been sent for postmortem. The 2009 batch IPS officer had taken charge as DIG on January 6 this year.

Prior to this, he was posted as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Anna Nagar, Chennai and as Superintendent of Police, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur.

However, it is being said in the reports that Vijayakumar went for a walk in the morning and reached his camp office around 6.45 am. He asked his personal security officer (PSO) for his pistol. After this he came out of the office. He shot himself at around 6.50 am. Vijayakumar had told his colleagues that he had not been able to sleep properly for a few weeks and was in depression.

CM Stalin said – this is a loss for the police department
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed grief over the incident and said that the death is a big loss to the police department. The Chief Minister wrote in a tweet – He is saddened to hear the news of the untimely death of C. Vijayakumar. Vijayakumar had served the Tamil Nadu Police Force well. My deepest condolences and sympathies to his family, friends and the police force.

This is the second incident of suicide by a senior official in Tamil Nadu in the last few years. Before C Vijay Kumar, the then Tiruchengode Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Vishnupriya had committed suicide at her home in Namakkal in 2015.
