City Corpn Drops Plan For On-street Parking Facilities On 30 Roads | Coimbatore News – Times of India

Coimbatore: The city corporation has dropped its plan to set up on-street parking facilities for two-wheelers and two-wheelers on 30 roads in the city in the wake of growing opposition from the public as well as political parties.
In a statement issued on Monday, city corporation commissioner Raja Gopal Sunkara said, “It was decided to roll out on-street facilities through a private company under a five-year agreement. Charges for parking for four-wheelers and two-wheelers were fixed. However, the city corporation did not receive expression of interest from any eligible private company to execute the project. Hence, the proposal has been cancelled.”
However, sources said that it was the opposition from the public for the plan that made the civic body rethink.
While Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan was among the first to oppose the proposal, state BJP chief K Annamalai who was in Coimbatore on Monday said the saffron party would stage a protest against paid parking on roadsides.
DMK’s ally CPM also opposed the project in a statement issued on Monday and urged the civic body to withdraw it.
Senior DMK leaders too instructed the authorities that the project would be detrimental to the party’s prospects in the upcoming urban local body polls. By evening, the corporation issued a statement about its decision to cancel the project.
A resolution to implement the app-based on-street parking was approved by the city corporation’s council on November 30 last year. The scheme was proposed to regularize haphazard parking and to increase revenue for the city corporation.
The project was proposed to be implemented on 30 roads, including Oppanakara Street, Big Bazaar Street, Mettupalayam Road, DB Road, NSR Road, Cross Cut Road, Dr Nanjappa Road, State Bank Road and Race Course. A total extent of the stretches identified was 28.6km. The parking fee was determined at 10 per hour for two-wheelers and 30-40 for four-wheelers depending on the road.
