On this day in 1965, Pakistan launched Operation Gibraltar to capture Kashmir. After this war broke out between India and Pakistan. There were two incidents behind this operation. First- India’s defeat in 1962 war with China and second- Jawaharlal Nehru’s death in 1964. Pakistan felt that India was weak now and it could be exploited.
The war between the two countries continued throughout August. On 1 September, Pakistan launched Operation Grand Slam to capture the Akhnoor sector. In response, the Indian Army crossed the border and targeted Lahore and Sialkot on 6 September. On September 22, after the intervention of the United Nations Security Council, both countries declared a ceasefire.
