The Center has reprimanded the increasing pollution in the major Ghaggar and Yamuna rivers of Haryana. After this, Haryana CM Manohar Lal has started a review regarding pollution in rivers. Soon Haryana will hold meetings with Himachal Pradesh regarding Ghaggar and Uttarakhand government regarding Yamuna. CM has instructed the officers to make comprehensive planning for this.

Use of river water in these areas
In the review meeting of Yamuna Action Plan, CM Manohar instructed to make plans to make maximum use of treated water of rivers in areas like irrigation, thermal power plants, industrial and horticulture. He said that it is necessary to protect Ghaggar and Yamuna. For this, the officers should start preparing for joint meetings with the officers of neighboring states adjoining Haryana.

The Ghaggar river drains water from Panchkula, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Fatehabad and Sirsa districts.

Dirty water falls in six districts
The Ghaggar River enters Haryana from Panchkula. After which the water of the drains of Panchkula, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Fatehabad and Sirsa districts goes into it. Many of these are such drains, whose water is being dumped into the river without being cleaned. As the water from the drains gets into the Ghaggar, the level of pollution also increases accordingly.

Increases BOD level
Not only does the amount of Bio Oxygen Demand (BOD) increase in this water, but the amount of fecal bacteria also increases. Therefore, this water cannot be used in any way. If this water is used then it can prove to be very dangerous for health.

When Yamuna moves towards Delhi, it is first done in polluted Panipat and Sonipat.

Yamuna is dirty in Panipat-Sonepat
When Yamuna moves towards Delhi from Tajewala Dam in Haryana, it is first done in polluted Panipat and Sonipat. After this, when Yamuna enters the border of Delhi, then if this water is not suitable for drinking or bathing, then it is not even suitable for irrigation. 15 MCD from drain number 6 and 90 MCD from Badshahpur drain is getting dirty water in Yamuna.

Drinking water supply from polluted Yamuna
The polluted Yamuna water is being supplied to Faridabad district. Reneewell scheme was started in 1997. Till then the water of Yamuna was considered to be very good for irrigation and drinking water, but in the last 25 years, the situation is that the water which is sent to Faridabad for drinking after treating the water of Yamuna, does not meet the criterion of purity. According to a report by Bureau of Indian Standards, the water of Reniwell has been described as impure.

What is BOD and DO
The quality of river water is measured on the standards of BOD and DO. Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) refers to how much oxygen a bacteria or microbe needs to decompose a biological substance in that water. Dissolved oxygen (DO) is the dissolved oxygen in that water. The BOD content in water should be less than three milligrams per liter and the DO content should be more than five milligrams per liter.
