These guidelines are designed to help students with Type-1 diabetes manage their medical condition during exams by providing necessary facilities and support
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) released the guidelines for students with Type 1 diabetes for the upcoming CBSE class 10 and 12 board exams in 2024. These guidelines are designed to help students with Type-1 diabetes manage their medical condition during exams by providing necessary facilities and support.
In a notice issued earlier this week, the board has recognised the challenges experienced by students with Type-1 diabetes during board exams. Consequently, special guidelines and standard operating procedures have been introduced for students to access these facilities.
CBSE has reviewed the support provided to students with Type-1 diabetes with the help of experts and has determined that specific facilities will now be accessible during the class 10 and 12 board exams. Now, these students will be permitted to bring designated items into the examination room or hall, contained within transparent pouches or boxes. The items include:
1. Sugar tablets/Chocolate/Candy
2. Fruits like Banana/Apple/Orange
3. Snack items like sandwiches and any high-protein diet
4. Medicines require as per doctor’s prescription
5. Water Bottle (500 ml.)
6. Glucometer and glucose testing strips
7. Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) machine, Flash Glucose Monitoring (FGM) machine, and/or insulin pumps.
The Board also released standard operating procedures to allow students to utilise these benefits. Essential guidelines include:
1. Students need to inform the board about their Type-1 diabetes during registration or submission of the List of Candidates (LOC).
2. Students need to upload certain documents on the portal to access facilities during board examinations. These documents include medical specialist recommendations for using CGM/FGM/Insulin pumps during exams and a parent’s assurance of the safety of these devices.
3. To use these facilities, schools, students, or parents must apply according to the schedule set by CBSE. Requests submitted after the schedule ends will not be accepted.
4. School/student/parent should visit the examination center at least one day before the exam starts to inform the Center Superintendent about the items they will be carrying.
5. Students should arrive at the examination center at least 45 minutes before the exam begins and ensure they are seated in the exam hall by 9:45 a.m.
6. Students must submit all applications and requests through their school, including the necessary documents. The CBSE will not accept direct requests from students.
7. Except for equipment attached to the body, all other items will be kept with the Assistant Superintendent (Invigilator) in a transparent box or pouch and can be retrieved by the students when needed.
