By-elections will be held on June 23 for three Lok Sabha seats and seven assembly seats in six states of the country. The Election Commission released the bypoll schedule on Wednesday. The notification for the bypolls will be issued on May 30 and the counting of votes will be done on June 26.

Two out of three Lok Sabha seats are from UP. Among these, Azamgarh seat fell vacant after SP leader Akhilesh Yadav and Rampur seat Mohammad Azam Khan won the assembly elections. On the other hand, Sangrur seat of Punjab was vacated by Aam Aadmi Party MLA Bhagwant Mann after becoming the Chief Minister. At the same time, one of the seven assembly seats is Delhi’s Rajendra Nagar seat, which fell vacant after AAP’s Raghav Chadha went to the Rajya Sabha recently.

Apart from this, by-elections are to be held for Mandar in Jharkhand, Atmakur in Andhra Pradesh and Agartala, Town Bordowali, Soorma and Jubrajnagar assembly seats in Tripura. The bye-election will help in filling the electoral college vacancies required for the election of the President. The presidential election is proposed in July.

Legislative council elections also announced

The Election Commission has also announced elections for 30 seats in the Legislative Councils of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Bihar. All these seats are falling vacant between June 6 and July 21. The elections for all these seats will be held on June 20 and the results will also come on the same day. According to the commission, elections are to be held on 13 seats in UP, 10 in Maharashtra and seven in Bihar.

Rajya Sabha elections: Sanjay Raut and Sanjay Pawar to file nomination
Shiv Sena chief spokesperson Sanjay Raut said on Wednesday that he and party ally Sanjay Pawar will file their nomination papers for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections on Thursday. Raut had said on Tuesday that Shiv Sena’s Kolhapur district president Sanjay Pawar would be the party’s second candidate for the June 10 Rajya Sabha polls. Sanjay Pawar’s candidature will come as a blow to former MP Sambhaji Chhatrapati, who was seeking support for his candidature. Raut said Shiv Sena will contest two Rajya Sabha seats and ensure victory on both. Raut will go to the Upper House on behalf of his party for the fourth consecutive time.

Preparations to tighten the noose on unrecognized parties

  • The Election Commission on Wednesday said it has initiated massive action against more than 2,100 registered unrecognized political parties for violating rules. The commission says that these parties have violated several rules, including not submitting reports related to donations and not giving information about change in name, headquarters, office bearers and address.
  • In a statement, the Election Commission said that 66 such political parties claimed exemption from income tax during FY 2020 without complying with the mandatory requirements under the Representation of the People Act and 2,174 parties have not submitted their donation reports. He also informed that action has been initiated against three registered unrecognized political parties in the case of financial irregularities. The names of 87 parties will be removed from the list.
